Mobility Assessment-Pain Management-Comfort Measures
As animals age they will develop muscle atrophy to varying extents, and may develop arthritis and pain. Often they will become less active and this starts a cycle. Keeping pets comfortable and active will help maintain mobility as they age. When pain is present there are multiple options to keep your pet comfortable, including medications, supplements, acupuncture, and Chinese herbal medicine. Integrating Western and Eastern medicine to manage pain can offer optimal results. Maintaining a healthy weight will decrease stress on their joints. Moderate exercise will keep them engaged and their muscles and joints active.
There are many supportive measures and modifications that can be made in the home to make their lives easier as they maneuver their environments in their aging bodies. Each pet may have specific requirements which we can identify and then work together to improve upon. Pain scales are available for assessment of chronic pain to determine if more comfort measures would be helpful.
